Here are a few spray tanning tips for the big day:

Exfoliate. Be sure to exfoliate at least two times per week starting several months before the big day. Exfoliation removes dead skins and this will make sure the fresh and even look at the wedding.

Hydrating & Moisturizing. When the skin is hydrated the sunless tan holds longer and looks better. Be sure to drink plenty of water, not only for you skin, but for your health too. In addition, apply lotion on a daily basis when getting out of the shower. Avoid using products that contain alcohol or anti-aging ingredients. These can actually dry out the skin.

Waxing. Take care of any waxing plans before coming in for the spray tan. Waxing can remove the tan in the areas being treated.

Trial appointment. Book an appointment a few weeks before the wedding day. This way you and the technician and agree on a perfect tone. Everyone has different skin tones, and it is always best to run a trial session before the big day.

Photos. Take photos of yourself after the trial session. See if that tone is exactly how you want to look in the wedding photos.

These are just a few wedding day airbrush-tanning tips. Just keep in mind to take some time for yourself because planning a wedding can be very stressful.

The world is buzzing right now about the Super Bowl XLVI tomorrow night. Who is going to win—New England Patriots or New York Giants? Restaurants, bars and people are preparing the hottest parties around. While they are busy stocking up on snacks and booze, how are you getting ready for these parties?

Have you thought about what to wear yet? Do you have the female fitted jersey that you’ll tie in a knot at the stomach with some cute cut-off jean shorts? If you are a man, the nice jersey with some khaki long shorts and flip-flops. Am I being stereotypical here? Maybe just a little..

At any rate, no matter what you are wearing to the party, a nice glow to the skin will fit perfectly. There is still time today to come in and get a scrub and/or tan before the big day. What should you do now? Here is a step-by-step guide for your next 2-hours:

1. Book an appointment online: Schedule Here
    a. Or call me: 561-455-4282

2. Take a shower. Get in the shower clean your skin and exfoliate. If you are planning on getting the scrub, then you can just wash your skin. We like it when people come in clean before a tan. It smells better and makes the most of your perfect tan.

3. Come in loose fitting clothes and flip-flips. This allows your tan to dry easier.

4. Once finished, you have about seven hours until you can shower.

That’s it folks. This is how you are going to have that perfect tan at the exciting Super Bowl party. Enjoy the festivities with that golden glow. I only ask one favor—when people ask where you tan, tell them about Scrub & Tan!

Enjoy the game, the commercials, the food and the booze. Remember, do not drink and drive!

Regardless of where you live, the winter has ranged from mild to geez louise this is cold. In South Florida, we have had only a few cold days so far. Even if you have noticed the mild weather change, it is important to understand that your skin, nails and hair have.

In the less drastic weather changes, your body will let warn its been a victim to the season’s change. It can range from dry skin, brittle nails or clingy hair. All this can be maintained depending on how one is treating them.

Are you eating and drinking well? Do you moisturize often? These are some questions to think about even if you are in a gloveless winter.

Body

We have said it before and we will say it again-drink water. It is so important for the body to stay hydrated and especially during the dry winter months. Another benefit one can take advantage of is incorporating fish or krill capsules, flax seed oils, evening primose oils. These help the body produce enough lipids to keep the smooth and soft.

Although we told you caffeine helps with the skin in the sun, it can also dry the skin out. Not only that, booze does too. If you are sipping your sins away, be sure to increase your water intake and moisturize as much as possible.

Face

With the cooler breezes coming our way, this cannot only leave one’s skin dry but with an ashen. In order to get that glow back, exfoliate, moisturize and fake it. Remember, going into tanning beds will not only risk one’s skin of cancer, but it ages. In order to get that glow on one’s face during the cooler months, come on in for a facial airbrush tan. Yes, we do that too!

However, to maintain the softness of the face there are a few things one can do. While in the shower, the pores are open and the skin is soft. This is a great time to bring in a scrub and exfoliate with an oil-free wash. Immediately after the shower, apply moisturizer that is oil-free. This can make all the difference in the world!

Hair

The wind and cold (and wooly hats and excessive rain) can strip the hair from the tip to the root. This will cause the hair to become dry, staticky and flyaways.

In order to give the hair a break, shampoo it less frequently. It is recommended every other day or less. While the hair is wet, be gentle with it. If possible, try cutting out the blow-drying and do not brush immediately out of the shower. Also, be sure to condition heavily and consider adding a serum for more moisture. If strapped for cash, try a tiny dash of extra virgin olive oil.

Lips

The only weather can cause more lip licking. I am only going to say this once – knock it off! This makes your mouth sad. Think of your lips as needing lots of care and attention. This is because the skin on the lips is different from the rest of your skin. It does not produce sweat or other natural oils.

In order to care for your lips, there are a few simple tips that can be done. First, run the toothbrush under warm water until the bristles soften. Then gentley brush the lips to remove any dry chapped skin. Regulary apply heavy moisturizer (petroleum jelly is amazing even though it sounds gross). Be sure to reapply through the day. Again, drinking plenty of water can make a huge difference here as well.

Nails

Okay, so we have been so focused on our hair, skin and lips, we almost forgot about the nails. Our poor sad, brittle nails that can be torn up from the colder air. In addition, the indoor/outdoor weather changes can make these poor guys unforgiving. During this time of year, make a point to run lotion on the nails and nail beds. Do this throughout the day to keep them in shape. Additionally, the protein intake (oily nuts like walnuts or fish) can give them a better chance at life.

One of the biggest party nights of the year is New Year’s Eve. It is difficult to have the party glow, when one’s skin is pale and pasty.

Here is how you can get that golden glow to look stunning a New Year’s Eve outfit:

Take a shower, shave, and exfoliate. Do not use lotion or wear makeup before coming in.

Wear loose fitting clothing. Even though our sunless tanning solution does not stain, it is recommended to wear dark colored clothing. For the feet, wear flip-flops.

During the session, one can wear what they feel most comfortable in—bathing suit or no bathing suit.

For those with long hair, bring a hair tie to keep it out of the face or falling during the session potentially blocking the skin.

Once the session is completed, one will stand in front of a fan for a few minutes facing the front and then facing the back.

Avoid showering for seven hours to let the DHA settle onto the skin, and then you are ready to hit the town looking golden.

When taking a shower for the first time after the waiting period, one will notice the color going down the drain. This is just excess and the tan is not washing away.

The entire session takes approximately 15 minutes. If getting the scrub, the session will run about 30 minutes.

Maintaining the tan

No soaking in hot baths

No Exfoliation

Pat dry the skin after a shower

Moisturize

Once it is all done, you will be the one with tan lines or no tan lines, but the skin will be glowing.

During the winter months, one is more likely to bare less skin due to the weather. However, this does not mean to ignore taking care of oneself. There are ways to help fight dryness and UV damage in order to promote smooth skin and minimize wrinkles. Here are some foods that help with winter skin (they are even in season!):

Broccoli

As a child, one should have learned eating vegetables are good for the body and apparently the skin. By eating more vitamin C rich foods, this can help keep away wrinkles and dryness that is age related. The study came from a research done in 2007 by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Vitamin C helps smooth the skin because of the ability to rid the body of free radicals that are produced from ultraviolet rays. It also plays a role in synthesizing collagen, which is a fibrous protein that firms the skin.

Carrots

In a previous post about antioxidants, we have mentioned how important carrots can be in one’s diet. Carrots can shield the skin again UV damage with its carotenoids beta-carotene and lycopene. In a study, volunteers who exposed themselves to UV lights had about 50 percent less skin reddening. This happened after they drank about 1 2/3 cup of carrot juice or ingested 2 ½ tablespoons daily of tomato paste. This was in addition to their regular diet for 10 to 12 weeks.

Cocoa

A type of flavonoid called epicatechin is found in cocoa (and tea and red wine). The Journal of Nutrition published an article about a study on 24 females. These women drank a epicatechin-rich cocoa beverage everyday for 12 weeks. It showed the improved skin texture. The explanation was epicatechin increases the blood flow to the skin. By doing so, this increases nutrients and oxygen supply. Both are essential factors to keeping healthy skin.

Coffee

A single cup of coffee daily can lower one’s risk of developing skin cancer. A study with published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention used 93,000 females who were coffee drinkers. These women drank one cup of caffeinated coffee a day. They showed a decrease the risk of developing nonmelanoma skin cancer by 10 percent. The more coffee they drank (up to about six cups a day), lowered their risk. Decaf coffee did not show the same protection.

Edamame

Isoflavones is found in edamame. This acts like an antioxidant, which looks for and cleans up dangerous free radicals that come from sun exposure. Isoflavones also aids in preserving the skin (firming collagen), which decreases in our 20s.

Grapefruit

Pink grapefruit get its pink-red hue from lycopene. This carotenoid can help smooth the skin. In 2008, the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, found that 20 volunteers who had higher lycopene had smoother skin. Other places to get lycopene are from carrots, guava, red peppers, tomatoes, and watermelon.

Spinach

Popeye was onto something here. Spinach possesses lutein, which is a carotenoid that protects the skin from UV harm. According to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a study revealed spinach stored under light continuously for at least three days boasted higher levels of vitamin C. In addition, it preserved levels of carotenoids lutein, folate, E, K and zeaxanthin.

Tea

Studies suggest the caffeine in tea (and coffee) may protect the skin again cancer. The way it works is caffeine kills precancerous and ultraviolet-damaged skin. It does this by blocking a protein the cancerous cells need to divide. The research showed exposing the skin to harmful sunburns caused by ultraviolet B rays inhibited the development of skin tumors.

Tuna

As many know, tuna is rich in omega-3. Omega-3 helps the skin looking young and prevents the development of skin cancer. One of the omega-3 fats in fatty fish is called EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). It has been known to preserve collagen, which is a fibrous protein that firms the skin. EPA, in combination with other omega-3 in fish and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), has been known to prevent skin cancer. It does this by reducing the inflammatory compounds, which can promote tumor growth. It is suggested to aim for two servings of fatty fish a week. It helps with omega-3s, which is good for the skin and heart.

During the holiday months, one can get busy running from mall to mall for their holiday shopping. Sometimes this can cause people to forget about taking care of themselves. This is a difficult time of the year to maintain one’s skin and appearances. In addition, this can lead to losing that healthy looking glow, especially in the winter months.

Scrub & Tan has some great holiday specials and spray tanning tips to avoid getting pasty this time of year.

Holiday Specials

Introducing our holiday specials, we are offering a free spray when spending $100 on clothing. Not only that, if one spends over $200 on clothing, they get unlimited tanning for one month. So do not delay, call us and book today (561) 455-4282.

Before Airbrush Tanning

Before getting a tan, be sure to clean and exfoliate the skin. Exfoliating the top layer of the skin will remove the dead skin cells, and aid in maximizing the potential life of the spray tan. We offer a full body and facial scrub before each session.

What to wear during a session

We recommend coming in loose fitting clothing. During the session, one can either wear a swimsuit or go bare. This really will depend on the comfort level of each person. Scrub & Tan’s organic spray tan does not stain clothes, so one does not have to worry.

After Tanning

Once the session is over, we recommend not showering for at least seven hours. This will allow the tan to settle onto the skin. When showering use warm water (not too hot) and rinse the body. Avoid using soaps that contain glycolic acids and other harsh substances. When drying off after the shower, lightly pat oneself dry with the towel.

Be sure to keep the skin moisturized in order to reach the potential life of the tan. By doing so, the skin does not get dry and flaky, which can fade the tan quicker.

Here it is our spray tan fans! The official winter holiday airbrush tanning tips.

Whether you are in Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth, West Palm Beach or the surrounding area. Give us a call today or schedule an appointment online. Do not be pasty for the holidays. Have everyone asking at the holiday party how you got that golden glow.

Here are a few tips to tackle skin care during the winter months:

Old Cosmetics

Start by going through the old makeup bag, and decide which items have expired. Bacteria can develop on cosmetics, and one does not want this on their skin. If holding on to mascara over three months, then toss it. In addition, foundation has a shelf life of about one year. This depends on the ingredients (fillers, talc, oils). While cleaning up the old makeup, also clean the applicators and brushes with mild soap and water. Once cleaned, leave them to air dry.

Beauty Sleep

During this busy time of year, one should get at least eight hours of sleep. The skin hair and nails can all show signs of sleep deprivation. The skin will become dry and dull. Nails become brittle without proper sleep.

If one has trouble falling asleep, try retiring early and quieting the mind. Another way to help fall asleep is by turning the electronics off an hour before bedtime and skipping caffeine.

Exfoliate

We have said it once and we will say it again. Exfoliate the skin with gentle microbeads to rid the dead, dry skin. Then apply a nonirritating moisturizer once completed. Skincare professionals skipping the more aggressive anti-aging creams during winter months. These creams would include products containing retinol or salicylic acid.

During the colder seasons, the acids can produce excessive dryness and flaking. Opt for a non-oil based moisturizer and gentle cleanser.

Gymnasium

During the winter months, many people tend to get busy and workout less. The cold weather can also influence someone to become sluggish and lazy. Within that busy schedule, be sure to fit in at least three times a week for some exercising. Eventually, the activity-induced endorphins make one feel more vibrant than any hot cocoa or a cheese platter.

Try something new for the winter to mix up the workouts. One can join classes such as yoga, pilates, kickboxing etc.

Pucker Up

During the colder months, chapped lips are always a problem. The number one rule is do not lick your lips. It can make the chapping worse. A great option for lip balm is one that includes a SPF protection of at least 15. It should also have added moisturizers like cocoa butter or Shea butter.

Arched Brows and Tinted Eyelashes

According to a renowned Los Angeles makeup and eyebrow artist, this winter’s hottest facial trend is professionally arched brows. Brows can frame one’s best features. It brings symmetry to the face and give that mid-winter crave we all desire.

Tinted eyelashes give one that effortless I wake up looking this good in the morning effect. Be sure to use a vegetable dye and never hair dye.

These are our winter skin care tips. Taking care of one’s skin properly during the change of the seasons and go a long way.

To gain a more influential evening effect, use topical bleaching ingredients like arbutin or vitamin C, licorice extract, or melanin inhibitor. If interested in taking it to the next level, get treatments that speed up the process, like lasers and light sources that take away red and brown discoloration.

Eat Smart to Look Good. Always keep in mind that what one feeds the body shows– inside and out. A diet that consists of sugary treats influences a process called glycation. This sugary intake leads to wrinkle and sagging from the weakened collagen and elastin. Not only will changing to a healthy balanced diet improve one’s complexion, but also helps lose weight and a more youthful appearance.

Note: One can also use skincare products that include anti-glycation ingredients or take carnosine, an anti-glycation product. These can be found in many health food stores.

Do not wait-Exfoliate! A simple way to add radiance to the skin is by exfoliating. Exfoliation only eliminates the top layer of dead skin cells. This will help the skin reflect light more consistently. It encourages collagen creation over the long term, and assists to smooth fine not only lines and wrinkles. Another option is using at-home microdermabrasion products or chemical peels including glycolic and lactic acid. In Dermatologist’s office, they offer a high strength version of these treatments.

Free Radicals and the Battles. We have said it before, and we will repeat it again: Antioxidants are the main key in reducing free radical damage. This will keep the skin youthful looking and feeling. Our skin is at a constant battle internally and externally with the aggressors that break down collagen and help free radicals thrive.

Moisturize – again and again! When using a mixture of moisturizing products, this gives the skin a break and removes stressful factors. It can also delay the aging process dramatically. Here are some ingredients that moisturizers should have:

Occlusive moisturizers retain water in the skin. This gives a more youthful appearance.

Emollients, such as linoleic acid, gives the skin a softer feel and smoother look.

Humectants—hyaluronic acid and glycerin—attracts moisture to the skin and smoothes out the fine lines.

If one sticks to these tips, they will have younger looking skin in no time.

Apparently, the daily cup of coffee may be helping more than just getting that boost in the morning. Researchers are showing that it may actually protect one from skin cancer. The new study supports previous research, which indicates caffeine may be an effective protection against fighting skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the research shows results from the most prevalent type of cancer.

The investigation has shed some light on the way caffeine is able to decrease the threat of sunlight-induced skin cancer. Caffeine has surfaced to slow down the ATR kinase path, which plays a key role in how the body reacts to DNA damage brought on by UV radiation. ATR restricts the cell division and allows DNA to heal, rather than letting damaged cells die.

Although, this may sound like a good thing, but actually not all repairs are successful. Some cells can continue to develop cancer. A study from Alan Conney, the director in the cancer research department of Rutgers University, recognized the ATR kinase pathway as being subdued by caffeine.

What does this mean? Well, the more DNA damaged cells that are killed off may be preventing non-melanoma (squamous or basel) skin cancer from developing.

Caffeine itself also performs as a sunscreen absorbing damaging UV rays, according to Conney. He even went onto say that sunscreen could one day contain a shot of caffeine.

Until that day comes upon us, there is still some good news for those coffee addicts. One may already be receiving a protective benefit from that daily cup. In 2007, a study of about 94,000 females found those who drank caffeinated coffee on a daily basis lowered their risk of non-melanoma skin cancer by 11%. The six cups a day coffee drinkers showed a 30% reduction in the risk.

Now that your coffee addiction sheds a bright light, this does not mean to go out without sun block. Always be sure to apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen when exposing the skin. It should be a SPF of 30 or higher. Be sure to check for the broad-spectrum label, as it will provide information on protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. For more information on which sun protection to use, check out our previous post for the best-rated sunscreens.

The end of the year is approaching quickly. Fall has arrived once again. In Florida, we may not have changing leaves and snowy nights, but the weather does get a little breezy and cooler. As for me, anything under 80 degrees, and on goes my sweater. With changes in weather, this influences our skin.

It is time to repair and restore after the hot summer days. Make a goal this fall to step up the game and improve on skin and fitness. Here are our best fall recommendations:

Cool water. While washing one’s face or taking a shower, consider using lukewarm water. It is not only better for the skin, but also the environment and utility bills. Hot water can dry out the skin.

Moisturizer. Not only do the seasons need to change, so does our skin. Try a new moisturizer that fits one’s current skin condition. The summer is humid and hot, so a thicker moisturize is not necessary. When the fall time comes, temperatures drop and skin becomes more dehydrated. This is especially true leaving the summer time.

Hydration. Drinking water helps the skin stay young looking, and is good for overall health. Be sure to take in at least six 6-oz. glasses per day or more if actively exercising three to four times per week (which you should be).

Sun Exposure. This is a huge one! Always protect the skin from when entering the sun. By taking precautions, this can decrease the chances of developing melanoma and premature aging of the skin.

Summer Glow. Yes! Keep the summer glow with options such as an organic spray tan. Facial wrinkles, neck wrinkles and brown spots all come from the sun. There are healthier options to keep the golden skin tone without the dangerous tanning beds in the cooler months.

Exfoliate. Exfoliating once a week will remove the dead skin cells to expose the fresher and younger skin.

Makeup. Transitioning into the fall makeup shades does not have to be drastic. Try some warmer colors when switching from the summer tones. Fall makeup trends usually consist of a creamy lipstick instead of the glossy summer lips. Fall is about “nude” colors. It is universally flattering and gorgeous. It can bring out the beauty in one’s natural tone.

Exercise. Not only should one be happy in the skin they have grown to love (no pun intended). While the seasons are changing, it can affect one’s mood. Exercise at least 30 minutes each day. It will make one feel better and boost endorphins.

Happiness. Forget the frumpy fall mood and reach for some walnuts! The brain-shaped nuts can have mood-boosting effects and help with the aging process. Foods that are rich in omega 3s help build the serotonin levels. This is a key to mental well-being. While fiber will help keep the blood sugar levels regulated. Mixing both omega 3s and fiber will give one that fall boost!

These are our fall season tips. Now go treat yourself something special and enjoy the day!
